Help Ensure Everyone’s Safety with the Safe and Proper Use of Gas in Homes and Buildings.

NFPA 54 is a critical resource for industries ranging from construction, fuel, manufacturing, and building operations to food service, health care, and alternative energy. The code provides requirements for helping to maintain safety and compliance in the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors for anyone designing, installing, and maintaining fuel gas systems.

Users who rely on NFPA 54 include:

  • Engineers
  • HVAC technicians
  • Facility managers
  • Maintenance supervisors
  • Utility professionals
  • Fire marshals
  • Code inspectors/authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs)

Key Aspects and Benefits of NFPA 54 Include:

  • New Requirements for Hydrogen Blending: Requirements around hydrogen being blended into natural gas in quantities 20 percent by volume or less were added to the 2027 edition. These requirements acknowledge that hydrogen blending is occurring in the industry, and fuel blends of 20 percent or less do not require any additional considerations for the fuel gas piping.

  • Updated Rules for the Removal of Unpurged Gas Piping: The removal of unpurged gas piping is now required to be performed by a qualified agency because they are trained on the hazards involved with that operation. A requirement was added to provide a means of testing line pressure regulators.

  • Notable Revisions for Improved Clarity: Requirements for systems containing flammable gas–air mixtures were revised. Because they are not common systems in the context of this code, system-specific requirements were replaced with requirements specifying they be designed in accordance with engineering methods.

  • Removed Equation for Fan-Assisted Appliances: The requirements for using the known air infiltration rate (KAIR) method were revised to remove the equation for fan-assisted appliances, as all appliances require roughly the same amount of combustion air and ventilation, and fan-assisted drafting can malfunction, which can lead to hazardous conditions.

  • Changes to Listings for Piping Materials: Plastic pipe venting materials for venting products of combustion are now required to solely be listed to UL 1738, Venting Systems for Gas-Burning Appliances, Categories II, III, and IV. Piping materials are listed in this code as a complete system rather than other drain, waste, and vent materials, which, when mismatched, can affect their venting performance.
