NFPA 70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace 2027
Electrical hazards are among the most serious threats to workplace safety.  Using NFPA 70E®, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace®, is a strategic investment: It helps prevent injuries from electric shock and arc flash incidents. It also helps prevent regulatory violations, reduces downtime, and helps preserve the bottom line for businesses.
Developed with input from industry experts and aligned with OSHA regulations, this standard empowers organizations to implement a comprehensive electrical safety program that helps save lives, safeguard assets, and strengthen business operational integrity.
The 2027 edition includes:
- Enhanced Requirements for Energized Work: Article 130 adds a requirement for an additional person to be present when justified energized work is performed under an energized electrical work permit, strengthening jobsite support and risk controls during high-risk tasks.
- Expanded dc and Battery Safety Guidance: Direct-current (dc) and battery-related requirements were clarified, revised, and expanded across Chapters 1 and 3. New Article 360 introduces battery risk assessment requirements, including contact, thermal, and chemical considerations, while new Section 360.4 addresses establishing a lower risk condition for batteries, including guidance on battery sectionalizing.
- Updated Arc-Rated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Compliance: The option to rely solely on a supplier’s Declaration of Conformity to demonstrate compliance for arc-rated PPE has been removed, reinforcing more robust verification expectations.
- Improved Hazard Application: Chapter 3 has been reorganized to better group general hazards, dc hazards, and ac hazards; ac hazards are further separated into sub-RF, RF, and mixed frequencies (other than dc and 50/60 Hz).
- New Safety Practices for Double Layer Capacitors: New Article 380 has been added to address work practices specific to electrical double layer capacitors, supporting safer procedures for these technologies.
