Today, more than 1.3 million fires were reported by fire departments across the U.S. in 2016 with an estimated 3,390 civilian fatalities. With 80.7 percent of all fire fatalities occuring in the home, fire safety education remains a key strategy to address fire fatalities. Residential fire deaths exceed those of any other building classification. More than half of the fire deaths that occur in residential buildings have occurred because a delay in detection due to the occupants being asleep at the time of the fire.
