The 2022 California Electrical Code, California Code of Regulations Title 24, Part 3 is based on the 2020 edition of NFPA 70, National Electrical Code (NEC)—the widely used code containing safety requirements for electrical wiring, overcurrent protection, grounding, and installation.

This edition includes the full text of the 2020 edition of the NEC, annotated with California amendments. Key updates include:

  • Grounding of disconnecting means installed on the supply-side of service disconnecting means
  • Revisions to service disconnect rules to help protect electrical workers from arc flash hazards
  • Reorganization of Article 800 to provide a general set of requirements to apply throughout the Chapter 8 articles
  • Height of working space for “housekeeping pads” for electrical equipment
  • The installation of wiring methods in exit enclosures
  • Sizing supply and load conductors used with adjustable-speed drive systems
  • AFCI protection of branch circuits in patient sleeping areas in care facilities
  • Special occupancies, special equipment, and special conditions, including installation of splash pads, the use of “Type P” cables in hazardous classified locations, and the reinspection of swimming pools and other bodies of water
  • And other CA specific revisions

Matrix incorporation tables show you which state agencies have incorporated and/or amended given sections of the NEC for applications within their respective authorities. Symbols indicate the status of changes to the NEC:

  • “[SFM]” identifies which State agency(s), by its acronym, has amended a section of the Code.
  • Other symbols indicate where a California amendment has been made to the Code, where a change has been made to a California amendment, or where California language has been deleted.

Throughout the NEC, text revisions are indicated with gray shading. A delta symbol (Δ) before a section number indicates that words within that section were deleted, and a Δ to the left of a table or figure number indicates a revision to an existing table or figure. New sections, tables, and figures are indicated by a bold, italic N in a gray box to the left of the new material. An N next to an Article title indicates that the entire Article is new. Where one or more complete paragraphs have been deleted, the deletion is indicated by a bullet (•) between the paragraphs that remain.
