G702™ - 1992 Application and Certificate for Payment – The Industry Standard for Progress Billing

Streamline your project's payment workflow with the AIA G702™ - 1992 Application and Certificate for Payment. This essential physical contract document provides a structured, standardized format for contractors to formally apply for progress payments and for architects to certify the amount due. Widely recognized as the industry's preferred "pay app," G702 expedites payment through a streamlined, auditable process suitable for projects of any size.

When to Use:
Use G702 whenever a contractor needs to formally apply for a progress payment and the architect needs to certify the amount due to the owner. This document is appropriate for projects of any size and complexity.

What It Does:
G702 provides contractors with a complete, convenient form on which to document the current status of the contract sum, including:

  • Total dollar amount of work completed and stored to date

  • Amount of retainage (if any)

  • Total of previous payments

  • Summary of change orders

  • Amount of current payment requested

The architect's signature certifies to the owner that the indicated payment is due. Should the architect determine a different amount is warranted, they may certify a revised amount with an accompanying explanation.

Seamless Integration with G703:
G702 is designed to pair with the AIA G703™ Continuation Sheet, which breaks the contract sum into portions of work in accordance with a schedule of values prepared by the contractor as required by the general conditions. Together, these forms provide complete transparency and documentation for every progress payment.

Key Features & Legal Protections:

  • Structured Format: Ensures consistent, complete payment applications every time.

  • Architect Certification: Provides official certification to the owner that payment is due, with the option to certify a different amount if necessary.

  • Comprehensive Tracking: Captures all critical payment data, including retainage, change orders, and previous payments.

  • Any Project Size: Equally effective for small renovations or large-scale construction projects.

Additional Information:
Commonly referred to as an AIA billing form, progress billing form, or "pay app."
