Metal Fabrication: A Practical Guide-4th Edition

Author: Robert O'Con and Richard Carr

The future of US manufacturing is both challenging and promising. The promise is in the fact that many firms have successfully embraced the principles of what is called the “new manufacturing model” driven by computer technology, this model is defined by the use of CAD/CAM methodology, statistical analysis of process, and the concepts of lean manufacturing. Of increasing importance is an educated and empowered work force.

This book serves two purposes. First, it serves as the basis for a comprehensive training curriculum in metal fabrication, covering shop mathematics blueprint reading, metallurgy, layout methods for precision and commercial tolerances, and basic machine operations. Also included is an extensive shop safety section and a precision layout section containing problems and exercises for instruction and testing.

Second, this text enables small start-up ventures to begin operating by providing instruction in the use of basic hand and power-operated equipment and tooling. While many chapters contain references to and descriptions of newer manufacturing machines and methods, the basic techniques presented throughout the text give students and trainees booth theoretical knowledge and an understanding and appreciation of the newer technologies found in today’s manufacturing environment.

This fourth edition includes updated and expanded information on press brakes by Steven D. Benson, an industry expert, experiences trainer, and THE FABRICATOR columnist. Also, a PowerPoint teaching aid was created for use with this revised released.
