The classical methods presented in this textbook are already in broad use in modern practice, but generally at more advanced levels. It is the section constants from the classical analysis, for example, that are currently used in more advanced studies to find the elastic response of concrete structures to earthquake loads.
Bringing the classical design methods forward into elementary levels of design is thus not a drastic departure from present practices; it does, however, permit a distinct simplification over current practices and it improves the continuity with future studies.
